Hi,

I'm a student at The University of Reading, UK, on the Masters degree in Typeface Design - http://www.typedesign.rdg.ac.uk/ - and am working on free software fonts.

A significant part of the course is developing our typeface into a family with a complex script complement, and full OpenType features.

I am considering designing an original Malayalam typeface designed for reading long passages of text on screen, that will be wholly created with and released as free software.

I found your recently released Meera OpenType font, so I thought I'd drop you a line to ask if you'd like to be involved in my project as someone to give me feedback :-)

What software did you use to create Meera? :-)

Do you know how many Malayalam free software fonts already exist? I see http://packages.debian.org/sid/ttf-malayalam-fonts and have found yours, but I wonder if others are out there - and are really free software, not just freeware.

Regards,
Dave

It is heartening to know that you are going to design/develop a free software font for Malayalam.Because I use free software only.

I am not an expert in font design but happened to make one because of the desire to see properly rendered Malayalam text. The result is suruma, a traditional lipi font.(suruma.sarovar.org).It is incompatible with uniscribe specs.

My orthographic inspiration is Rachana, the complete traditional lipi font designed by Mr.Hussain who is a part of Rachana Aksharavedi which strives for the preservation of Malayalam orthography in its original form. The major contribution of Meera is from Mr.Hussain.

When I made suruma, I departed from the uniscribe standard for opentype tables. The main variation was the treatment of post-base forms of YA,RA,LA and VA.In uniscribe they are tagged as 'pstf'(post base form) for the GSUB.The 'pstf' necessitates a rarrangement of characters by the rendering mechanism before they are GSUBed.This posed some problems with the rendering/shaping system called pango. So I changed them to 'akhn'(akhand) with a VIRAMA preceding sequence which means they won't undergo the rearrangement process.Consequently pango need to be modified, too. These variations are incompatible with the uniscribe specs. So I added 'pstf' tags also for the post-base glyphs in the g02 versions of Rachana and Meera.

Fontforge is perhaps the one and only free software tool now available for opentype font making. It fits the bill if you are going to develop a font for the pango/freetype/cairo trio.

Meanwhile, AnjaliOldLipi(by Mr.Kevin) is the most widely used free font in M$ environment because it is neatly hinted.MalOtf, made by N V shaji using Jeroen Hellingman's metafont and opentype'd by Baiju M.(who started off SMC) is first opentype Malayalam font as free software.Jeroen Hellingman's metafont source also helped me while creating bitmaps for suruma.
